Assignment #11

Oppression is a prolonged cruel or unjust treatment or control. A difference between violence and non violence is when you physically hurt someone & non-violent resistance is when you resist without physically hurting someone. Agency means to have control over your action. Oppressed people should use non-violent resistance because is you use violent resistance it’ll show that your serious and all , but then the police have a reason to hurt you. That’s why if you use non- violent resistance you can put your point across from doing sit ins, speeches, social media post, following directions but having the freedom to talk back without hurting someone.

First off my research project is great evidence for why oppressed people should use nonviolence to agency. The document i chose was “social media activism” that shows how the social media can be used to gain agency by using non-violence because, you can put out quotes and any post to show reissant non violently. This is an Article on the internet made by Jonathan moyer in May 8,2017. Yes this document is trustworthy because it was published on the internet in 2017 which is recent and because the one who published it has no reason to put out false information. For many, social networks have infamously become outlets for proliferating ill-informed political opinions “. This quote is used show that you can use non-violence resistance  gain agency because in the quote it says many social networks became political opinions.

Secondly for my supporting paragraph i decided to choose the Malala speech because she was going through oppression and she fought it with non-violence. This document is about a 16 year old girl who had got shot in the head and survived. This is a speech given by 16 year old Malala Yousafzai to the United Nations General Assembly on July 12 2013. I believe that this is trustworthy because it came from the girl herself witch is the primary source so it’s believable.”Even if there was a gun in my hand and he was standing in front of me, I would not shoot him. This is the compassion I have learned from Mohamed” this quote shows non violence. The quote shows nonviolence because it’s coming from her own mouth saying she wouldn’t even have retaliated by shooting him back or anything but by stating that and what happen in a peaceful way shows non-violence resistance, but if she would of shoot him or did anything physically that’ll be violent resistance.

Lastly this document supports my answer because when oscar grant got killed he wasnt resistancing at all in no type of violent way he was listening and on the floor he was cooperating. This document is basically talking about how oscar grant died at the fruitvale bart station and then its explaining the proteste that they was doing for him. The source is An excerpt from an article titled “In California, Protests After Man Dies at Hands of Transit Police” that was published on The New York Times newspaper’s website.  The article was written by Jesse McKinley on JAN. 8, 2009. This is trustworthy and reliable because uits no reason to be bias about the story of the protest or what happen to oscar grant because there is more than enough evidence there’s a movie about it and a whole lot of different articles. “Transit Officer Johannes Mehserle, 27, pulls his gun and fires a single shot. Mr. Mehserle looks up at another officer, and then handcuffs Mr. Grant. The images have been repeatedly broadcast on local television and streamed online”. This quote is showing how oscar grant died by not even reacting violently. This quote is good evidence because it shows how oscar grate got shot while he was on the ground NOT moving and then got handcuffed witch is showing that he wasn’t resisting violently and shows he was resisting non violently by trying to listen.

Assignment #9 – Oppression Essay

Oppressed people is when people get treated cruel or unjust that is prolonged. Systems of oppression is a system that is organized of treating people unjust or cruel. Levels of oppression is institutional oppression, interpersonal oppression, and internalized oppression. Oppressed people experience systems and levels of oppression by going to jail and having to change your skin tone. Those are institutional oppression and interpersonal oppression because in jail it’s a organized way thing are set up in there and to change your skin tone is interpersonal oppression because that’s not who you really are.

First off the way oppressed people experience systems and levels of oppression by going to jail and having to change your skin tone. Those are institutional oppression and interpersonal oppression because in jail it’s a organized way thing are set up in there and to change your skin tone is interpersonal oppression because that’s not who you really are. One document is the document that is about the school to prison pipeline and that’s a system of oppression which is institutional oppression the school to prison pipeline also is having a zero tolerance policy means that a school has zero tolerance for any kind of misbehavior or violation of school rules, no matter how minor and that oppress people because that’s treating people cruel and unjust. This is a quote from an article on a website thoughtco.com the article is titled “Understanding the School-to-Prison Pipeline” and it was written by by Nicki Lisa Cole, Ph.D. on April 25, 2017. The quote i chose from document #10 is ”The school-to-prison pipeline is a process through which students are pushed out of schools and into prisons.” Oppressed people feels oppression by this because it puts their kind in danger of failing in life all because of the system.

Second off the way oppressed people experience systems and levels of oppression by going to jail and having to change your skin tone. In the emmett till document witch is document #11 it explains racisms because they had lynch a 14 year old black male, but the lady had came out and told the truth that most of the stuff she said were false and how she falsely accused Emmit Till for stuff he didn’t even do. She had told this stuff to Look Magazine Interview. This is a quote from an article on the New York Times Newspaper’s Website.  The article is titled “Woman Linked to 1955 Emmett Till Murder Tells Historian Her Claims Were False” and it was written by Richard Perez-Peña on January 27, 2017. A quote from this document is that “ Emmett grabbed her and was menacing and sexually crude toward her, that part is not true.” This is a system / level of oppression because of how you can’t just be yourself and your own color without getting judge or mentally or physically hurt, because if Emmett Till was white there wouldn’t be this going on.

Assignment #8

Power means the ability to control events and the behaviors of other people.Marginalize means to put off to the side, or make less important.Exploit means to take unfair advantage of someone for your own benefit. The way People with power is able to marginalize and exploit people is when they go to jail, because the people in jail is pushed off to the side and thought of as less while the people with power run the jail and run you because yours inside there, and that’s how it exploit people because that’s unfair.

First off people with power, put certain people off to the side to use them for there advantages because of the power that they have behind them. Depending on their identities, Document #2 shows how they would be killed off by sickness, and be used because the people with power has more advantage. The document is a Article by Heather Pringle on June 4 2015. When the document of #2 says ” killed off half of the population”, Because of the fact that people use they power to take over and kill people in a way they couldn’t think of.

Furthermore this is next document is marginalizing people by separating the different people off of there skin color. The FHA witch is the Federal Housing Administration has adopted a system of maps that rated neighborhoods according to their perceived stability. This is a quote from an article that’s on a news website called the atlantic titled “Case for reparations” by Ta-Nahesi Coates written in June 2014. A quote from this document is “ green areas rated “A” but where black people live the area is rated “D”, and were usually considered ineligible  for FHA insurance”. This shows that people with power marginalize and exploit people with different identities by the areas people homes are. People with power marginalize black people because they were viewed as contagions because of their neighborhood and their appearance and social class.

Finally in this last document #7 is marginalizing people by chopping off their legs and cutting up people’s bodies at a festival. The people that is
